GEGENÜBER FESTIVAL

Stories of migration characterize our modern societies, in which people from different cultural backgrounds search for belonging. Cultural diversity is celebrated on the one hand, but at the same time new social boundaries are emerging. The Goethe-Institut's “Longing/Belonging” festival presents artistic contributions and social discourses from Germany and North America.

On-Going Projects

Longing / Belonging

Cultural diversity is celebrated, but at the same time, new social boundaries are emerging, as films such as Republic of Silence, Kaddish for a Friend, Zuhur’s Daughters and Nasim illustrate.

Made in Germany? Art and Identity in a Global Nation

This exhibit takes an unprecedented look at German art since 1980. Featuring artists from different generations and diverse backgrounds, the exhibition complicates notions of German identity, especially the idea of ethnic and cultural homogeneity.

Goethe On Demand: Alaska

Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne—what lies outside Germany’s metropolises? “City, Country, River—A Cinematic Journey Across Germany” is a new yearlong Goethe on Demand series exploring everyday realities in less known parts of Germany, with a new film offered every month.
