The German embassy in Prague, 30 September, 1989: 5,000 GDR refugees have been informed that they are allowed to leave. Their joy is followed by shock: the journey to the West will go through the GDR. It is the beginning of a trip full of tension and uncertainty. A historical event that has decisively shaped the path to German unity is retold here. The focus of the film is the perspective of the people who hoped that their departure would not be thwarted at the very last moment. The film is made up of archival material, interviews with witnesses of the time and re-enacted scenes.
