Daughters of de Beauvoir #2: Simone de Beauvoir’s Legacy

Institut français du Royaume-Uni

With Mithu Sanyal (doctor of cultural sciences), Imogen Sutton (director of the documentary Daughters of de Beauvoir), Margaret Drabble (novelist) and Sarah LeFanu (biographer), Kate Muir (chair, film critic and novelist)

Academy Award Nominee Imogen Sutton’s Daughters of de Beauvoir interweaves the life of Simone de Beauvoir with those of the women she influenced – in particular through her seminal book The Second Sex published just 70 years ago. The film includes archive footage of de Beauvoir with Jean-Paul Sartre, and exclusive interviews with writers Kate Millett, Ann Oakley and Marge Piercy who all cite her as a major force in their lives.

The documentary (Daughters of de Beauvoir, dir. Imogen Sutton, 1989, 60 mins) will be followed by a discussion between the abovementioned panelists. We are delighted to support Mithu Sanyal's participation in the dialogue.
