We are pleased to be able to present you with a selection of the activities of the Goethe-Institut Iraq twice in our newsletter in May 2024 and hope you enjoy reading the second part of the May newsletter.

Exhibition

Helan

Art Exhibition

On May 18 at 7pm in the framework of Helan there will be an exhibition opening by Hasan Hüseyin Deveci, who goes by the artist name Malmime, at the Framing Photojournalism School. The Cologne-based artist and art educator aims to create new perspectivesto perceive and interpret reality. The viewer should be taken behind the scenes of reality and encouraged to engage with the symbolism of reality. Helan is a project of the Goethe-Institut Irak in cooperation with the Sêv Gallery and the Framing Photojournalism School.

Chai Talk Bagdad 13.05.2022

Chai Talk

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of the author Franz Kafka, we discuss with Dr. Atef Botros in the Chai Talk on May 24 at 11 am the author's impact on Arabic and Iraqi literature. The researcher Atef Botros works on the reception of German writers and thinkers in Arabic-speaking countries. Chai Talk is an event organized by the Goethe-Institut Irak in cooperation with the Mada Group for Media, Culture and Art.

Erbil

Al-Mada Reading Club

The researcher Atef Botros wrote his Ph.D. on the reception of Kafka in the Arab world. At the event on May 25 at 6p.m., the Goethe-Institut Irak and al-Mada Reading Club welcome the scholar to a discussion about his work, which was published in a revised version in Arabic in 2019. The event will take place in Arabic.

Activity for Kids

Bulbul

Children aged 6-9 are invited to a Bulbul event at Sêv Gallery on May 23 at 6 pm. Together we will read a story about friendship and sharing and let it inspire us when working with clay! Bulbul is a project of Goethe-Institut Irak and the Sêv Gallery.

Film

Short Film Nights on the Tigris

The Institut Français Irak and Goethe-Institut Irak are pleased to invite you to their "Tiger Short Film Evening" in Baghdad on 24 May 2024 at 7pm at the historic Abbasside Palace. A unique opportunity to discover a selection of Iraqi, French and German short films aimed at young people. 6 short films to illustrate and question the place of young people in society, and the future facing these young adults.

KultKino / Ciné CLub

On May 23 at 6:30 pm, Goethe-Institut Irak and the Institut Français d'Irak à Erbil are inviting you to a KultKino/CinéClub screening at the Institut Français. In the film “House without a Roof” by Soleen Yusef, the siblings Alan, Jan and Liya embark on a journey into a world that has become alien to them in order to fulfill their mother's last wish and are forced to face their family history.
The film will be screened in German with English subtitles.

Goethe Special Film Screening

On May 28 at 7 pm, Goethe-Institut Irak will show the film “Elaha” by director and screenwriter Milena Aboyan in the Empire Cinema in Family Mall in Erbil. The drama tells the story of a young woman's balancing act between family traditions and individual freedom.
 

Learning German

Sulaymaniah

New Course Location

The first German course in Sulaymaniah starts on May 19. The A1 course takes place three times a week in the former tobacco factory and complements the face-to-face courses in Baghdad and Erbil as well as the online courses.
 

Looking back on...

Music Workshop Baghdad

With its presence at the 10-day International Book Fair in Erbil, the Goethe-Institut Irak demonstrated its strong role as a cultural player in Iraq. In addition to classic consultations about their cultural projects and programs in the language field, a diverse set of activities was offered at the stand.
The Goethe-Institut was also involved in the stage program with a total of 14 panel discussions and 3 concerts, including a discussion on the importance of reading clubs in Iraq, in which representatives of reading clubs from Mosul, Basra and Erbil were present, as well as a panel discussion with the German-Iraqi author Najem Wali on the topic of space in his literary work.

12 Jazz

The band “12 Jazz” plays Jazz music with a Kurdish twist. The band, consisting of 12 students and young musicians, had their first concert on May 7 in Roshnbiri Hall in Erbil in the framework of Helan.
Helan is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institut Irak, the Sêv Gallery and the Framing Photojournalism School.
