Dear reader,

We are pleased to present you with a selection of the activities of the Goethe-Institut Irak in our June newsletter and wish you an interesting lecture.

Learning German

Conference for skilled workers and teachers

Creating Prospects

On June 8, skilled workers and teachers can look forward to a conference on the topic of “Creating Prospects – successfully qualifying together” at the Erbil International Hotel. The lectures and workshops will cover topics such as the Skilled Immigration Act, studying in Germany, tips on teaching "Landeskunde" in German lessons, and information on living and working in Germany. Take the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with experts and like-minded people!

Preparation course for level B1

With the two-day preparation course in Erbil on June 13 and 15, German learners on B1 level can optimally prepare for the Goethe Certificate B1.

Public Viewing

European Football Championship

The European Men's Football Championship will take place from June 14 to July 14. Visit us at the Goethe-Institut in Erbil when Germany plays against Hungary on June 19 at 7 pm! Before the game, a taster course focusing on German vocabulary will be offered.

Helan

Concert and Exhibition

In June, the Helan events at the Framing Photojournalism School in Erbil include a concert on June 8 and an exhibition opening on June 22. The event begins at 7 pm. Details of the events will be published on our social media channels. Helan is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institut Irak, the Sêv Gallery and the Framing Photojournalism School.

Choman Festival

On June 20 and 21, music lovers will get their fill at the Choman Festival. Performing bands include the Mirzo Band from Shengal and the Yasna Band. A diverse selection of music awaits you! The festival takes place as part of Helan, a project of the Goethe-Institut Irak in cooperation with the Sêv Gallery and the Framing Photojournalism School.
 

Literature and Discourse

Erbil

Al-Mada Reading Club

Twice, on June 8 and 22, the literature event with al-Mada Reading Club will be dealing with the author Franz Kafka and his influence on Arabic literature as part of the three-part Kafka series. On June 8 we will welcome Ibrahim Mahmoud, who researches literature at the University of Duhok, and on June 22 we will discuss a novel influenced by Kafka's writing. The event is a cooperation between the Goethe-Institut Irak and the al-Mada Reading Club and will take place at 6 pm in the Haval Bookstore in Erbil.

Activity for Kids

Bulbul

On June 20 at 6 pm, the children's event Bulbul will take 6-9 year old participants into the realm of fantasy. We will get to know two seemingly opposite characters who start to like each other despite all their differences and will use colors to implement the ideas. Bulbul is a project of the Goethe-Institut Irak and the Sêv Gallery and will take place in the Sêv Gallery.

Erbil

German-French discourse event

Two literature translators will meet in a German-French discourse event on June 24. In the event, we will discover the peculiarities and challenges of literary translation between Kurdish and German, respectively Kurdish and French literature – and find similarities between the languages.

Film

KultKino /Ciné Club

The movies in the KultKino/Cinéclub series on June 6 and 13 focus on two young protagonists who have to assert themselves in a challenging situation. In “Fragile” by director Emma Benestan on June 6, this is achieved with the help of a group of friends, and in “Lessons of a Dream” by director Sebastian Grobler on June 13, an innovative English teacher receives unexpected support from his students. The films will be shown in the original language with English subtitles at the Institut francais d’Irak in Erbil, with the screening starting at 6 pm.

Looking back on...

24 hours of German

In May, visitors to the Goethe Institute took part in numerous activities such as taster courses, information events and game sessions in Erbil. In addition to learning German, the 24 Hours of German event was all about having fun with the language and getting to know like-minded people!

Guan Eden Workshop

In a workshop with the artist Malmime, the 14 participants of the Guan Eden Project 2024 dealt with the topic of the environment and how it affects us. Through discussions, artistic workshops and insights from alumni, the participants further developed their project ideas, which they will implement over the course of the year. Guan Eden is a project of the Goethe-Institut Irak and part of the Ta'ziz partnership, which is funded by the Federal Foreign Office.
