Internship
The Goethe-Institut Nairobi offers students in higher semesters or those who have completed their studies, the opportunity of an internship. They have the opportunity to gain insight into the work of a Goethe-Institut and participate in the planning and implementation of (exclusively) cultural programmes.
PLEASE NOTE, we are currently not receiving any more internships.
Successful applicants will be contacted by 29th March 2024. If you do not hear back from us by then, please consider your application as unsuccessful.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
In order to be able to make decisions for an internship quickly and smoothly, we would like to ask you to fill out the online questionnaire in German and send it back directly to our Goethe-Institut.
Please plan your internship well in advance. At least four months in advance will increase your chances of applying!
Goethe-Instituts abroad will request further application documents if they are interested:
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of reference
(must be written by a university teacher or lecturer, should not exceed one DIN A4 page, should give a personal impression of your performance and briefly explain why you are suitable for an internship abroad)
REMUNERATION AND INSURANCE
The intern receives an expense allowance of € 400.00 per month.
(For German nationals)
Travel grants can be applied for from the DAAD. Information on this can be found on the DAAD website:
Please clarify your health insurance cover with your health insurance provider in Germany before you start your internship. Please also check your accident insurance for the duration of your stay abroad.
VISA AND VISA PROCUREMENT
German nationals are required to have a visa to enter Kenya. A passport valid for at least 6 months and a return or onward travel ticket must be presented. The visa fee is currently USD 50.
Visas can be easily obtained on arrival at all official border stations, including Nairobi and Mombasa airports. They are valid for 3 months with the possibility of a single extension.
ARRIVAL
Scheduled and charter flights with Condor, LTU, KLM, African Safari Airways and British Airways operate from all major airports in Germany to Nairobi and Mombasa several times a day throughout the year.
If you have booked your flight as part of a package, your transfer to the hotel is usually taken care of, but if you have flown individually, you can take a bus or cab to your accommodation. If you are taking a cab, agree the fixed fare again beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings later on.
Further information and a detailed city map can be found here:
Travel allowance through DAAD
For internships of at least two months, the German Academic Exchange Service grants a travel allowance under certain conditions. We will send you a confirmation of the internship period after you have confirmed your appointment. You must enclose this with your application to the DAAD.
ACCOMMODATION
Although we can help with finding accommodation, interns are responsible for finding a room themselves.
INTERNSHIP CONFIRMATION AND REPORT
You are obliged to prepare a report at the end of the internship, which serves as the basis for the internship confirmation.
As a rule, there is no evaluation of your work placement, but this can be provided on request.
Please request the confirmation from the internship supervisor in good time. However, there is no legal entitlement to a letter of evaluation.
