As Sri Lanka experiences island wide restrictions in travel and movement, the House of kal Colombo succumbs to operating digitally at the moment. Seher Naveed facilitator for both the Houses in Karachi and Colombo, hosted the Drawing Marathon for participants in Sri Lanka from Karachi, via Zoom. Despite the physical distance the workshop proved to be fertile ground for interesting and explorative conversations.

Materials, fabrics and pieces from our natural environment were foraged, painted on with ink and then fed through the traditional printing machine. Residents were encouraged to not only think about the final form of these finished, printed works, but also the raw materials, the sources, the items before they are fed through. What is their value? What do they represent? How do we interact with these pieces before and after we have used them?

Is the process of print a performative act in itself -- as we saw portrayals of the blur of memory, silence, peace and reconciliation and religious architecture in the pieces that were made. What does this tell us about collective/individual archives, when we handle these items and try to find meaning from it -- well beyond our senses of sight and touch, but also smell, emotions, nostalgia and our interactions before and after it. Some of the finished pieces were quietly poetic, while others happily surprised even the creators of the work, many not having used these printmaking methods before.
