Braunschweig 1874: At the prestigious Gymnasium Martino-Katharineum, as everywhere in Germany, school lessons drag on quite stiffly and sluggishly. The sports lesson consists mainly of tiring gymnastics exercises, the boys are drilled - they can have fun after school. But when the progressive headmaster Merfeld (Burghart Klaußner) decides to hire an English teacher, things start to change. The choice falls on the agile teacher Konrad Koch (Daniel Brühl), who has returned to his hometown after several years in England. And in his luggage he has a very special leather ball... With the help of this said "football" Koch wants to inspire his new class for the English language. The college resists the young colleague's new learning methods.
