The Syrian Archive preserves verified and crowd-sourced digital content documenting human rights violations in the Syrian civil war. In collaboration with Syrian activists, journalists, and technologists, Hadi Al Khatib gathers footage posted to social media outlets as evidence of human rights violations in order to ensure access for forces of accountability. The archive acts as a real-time truth and reconciliation platform, aimed at ensuring a grassroots memory of violence without relying on social media corporations.
In collaboration with non-governmental organizations like the Open Society Justice Initiative and the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, the Syrian Archive sparked investigations of Syrian officials for the sarin attacks on Eastern Ghouta and Khan Shaykhun in 2013 and 2017, which killed more than 1,400 people.
