The grassroots activist coalition Take Action Chapel Hill was founded in 2018 by Maya Little, Gina Balamucki, and Annie Simpson. Formed to support anti-racist activists facing charges related to protests against white supremacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the group organized efforts that led to the takedown of the contentious Confederate monument Silent Sam and ongoing efforts to challenge narratives of campus history related to the Civil War and racial justice.
In addition to their organizing efforts, the coalition has produced several public art interventions, including the James Cate Memorial, in commemoration of the Chapel Hill activist who was murdered on UNC’s campus by a white supremacist biker gang in 1970.
