The setting of the film The Hungry River is a landslide on the riverside in the Southern West of Vietnam. Contrary to the peacful imagination, the river section of this small hamlet is eroding. The movie portrays the lives of those living by the Mekong River branch landslide. The majority of the population there used to survive by fishing along the river. Nowadays, the river has changed rapidly. There are fewer fish. The alluvium is reduced and human impacts worsen the erosion day after day. Traditional occupations are lost; land, houses, graves and even cultural practices... are gradually washed away into the hungry river.
