The Goethe-Institut Johannesburg is looking for a Facility and Maintenance Coordinator/handyman on a 50% basis, working at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg. The contract is for 20 hours a week and limited to a 2-year contract with a salary based on the applicable remuneration scheme of the Goethe-Institut South Africa.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facility Management:           
    • Perform daily building, grounds, and equipment inspections
    • Addressing minor defects through repair work.
    • Maintain and securely store hand tools and electrical tools
    • Keep the facilities storeroom clean and organised.
  • Coordination of External Service Providers:
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of external contractors to ensure quality standards.
    • Monitor and follow up on scheduled maintenance dates with service providers
  • Technical Support for Events and Exams:
    • Monitor and support event and exam setups, including assembly, dismantling, cleaning, technology setup, transport, and purchasing.
    • Provide technical support for events and examinations, ensuring all necessary equipment and technology are functioning properly.
    • Drive the company car when needed, including running errands and picking up guests for the Institut.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Monitor health and safety regulations within the Institut and project offices.
    • Assist with conducting training sessions on health and safety protocols for staff.
    • Ensure fire equipment and first aid kits are serviced as prescribed.
  • General Support Duties:
    • Provide assistance with various general duties as needed within the organization.
    • Provide cleaning assistance at the Institut as needed.
    • Drive the company car when required.
    • Assist the operations officer with administrative tasks.
    • Substitution for driver, caretaker and operations officer.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Relevant educational background in general maintenance, or a related field.
  • Health and Safety certificate (Advantageous)                 
  • Previous experience in facility management, maintenance coordination, or a similar role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Initiative in resolving building issues
  • Work on weekends when necessary.
  • Willingness to work overtime at short notice.
  • Ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Valid code 10 driver license.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • No criminal record or pending cases.
    • South African work permit, non-South African applicants need to have a valid work permit for South Africa.
