Eco-friendly alternatives to Wrapping Paper

Wrapping gifts sustainably is easier than you think. In our 6th Advent calendar door you can learn about eco-friendly wrapping paper alternatives that we already have lying around the house.

Reuse paper

To avoid buying new paper, we can use paper we have around the house that we would otherwise throw away, such as old newspapers, magazines, or maps. Not only does this conserve resources, but it gives the gift a special rustic look. Decorated with dried flowers and twigs, we can add a personal touch to the gift.  

Gift boxes and cardboard boxes

Boxes, cases and cartons are convenient alternatives to paper. On the one hand, they are quick and easy to wrap gifts in. On the other hand, they can be reused for the next gift or to store small items. Gift boxes can be bought new, but it is even more sustainable to look around your own home. A beautifully painted shoe box can quickly become the perfect wrapping!

Fabrics for wrapping

There's another material we often have lying around the house too: fabric! Maybe we've been meaning to get rid of some of these items, such as T-shirts, tea towels, or scarves? Freshly washed, they are perfect for wrapping gifts and can be reused afterwards. A great wrapping tip is furoshiki. This Japanese tradition is a simple folding technique in which gifts are wrapped and then knotted at both ends.
