Marzipan is not only popular in Germany. Marzipan sweets are made at Christmas time in countries all over the world. We are curious: Do you know another marzipan treat?

Spain: Panellets

These small, round cookies are mainly made from ground almonds, sugar, sometimes sweet potatoes or potatoes, and are usually decorated with pine nuts. As traditional Spanish sweets, they are particularly popular in Catalonia during the All Saints' Day celebrations (La Casanyada).

France: Calissons d'Aix

Calissons are small sweets made from candied fruit, almonds and sugar, coated with a glaze. Calissons d'Aix are a French specialty from Aix-en-Provence - because the fruit, usually melons or oranges, comes from this region. They are a typical souvenir at Christmas time.

Hungary: Szaloncukor

These Hungarian Christmas sweets are not only a popular sweet, but also a traditional, colorfully wrapped Christmas tree decoration. Hence the name “salon candy” - the Christmas tree is typically placed in the salon (“szalon”) of the house. The little treats come in different varieties. They are often filled with marzipan, nuts or jam and glazed with sugar or cocoa.

Sweden: Prinsesstårta

It is probably the most popular cake in Sweden: the Prinsesstårta (princess cake). It consists of fluffy sponge cake, vanilla cream, jam and lots of cream. It is covered with a layer of marzipan, usually in a bright green color, and a marzipan rose is often included in the decoration.

Germany: Marzipankartoffeln

And which marzipan treat is the most popular in Germany? The absolute classic: marzipan potatoes! The small balls are made from marzipan and dusted with a cinnamon and cocoa mixture, which gives the sweets their typical taste. They are particularly popular in this country at Christmas time and are often given as gifts.
