Christmas tree decoration traditions from around the world

Have you ever hidden a Christmas cucumber in your Christmas tree? No? This is a common tradition in the USA. And it's not the only place with unusual Christmas tree decorations. Here are five interesting Christmas tree decorating traditions.

USA: Christmas cucumber

Originally from Germany, the Christmas cucumber is particularly popular in the USA. Whoever is the first to find the green cucumber hidden between the branches will receive an extra present.

Mexico: Piñata

Some Mexicans hang a mini piñata in the Christmas tree - but it will not be smashed on Christmas Day.

Denmark: Kræmmerhuse

In Denmark, a cone-shaped bag, usually homemade, is hung in the branches of the Christmas tree: The 'Kræmmerhuse. Sweets are usually hidden inside.

Germany: The Apple of Paradise

In Germany, it is a Christian tradition to hang an apple in the Christmas tree - as a symbol of paradise.

Ukraine: Christmas spider

In Ukraine, Christmas trees are often decorated with spiders or spider webs made of pearls. According to a folk tale, a spider once decorated the Christmas tree of a poor family with its beautiful webs. In Ukraine, spiders are considered to bring good luck.
