The Evolution of Libraries as Commons

This study aims to inspire and show potentials and challenges of the concept of commons in the context of libraries, with special attention to the spatial aspect and access to knowledge.



 

It is a great challenge to apply the concept of commons to different resources, especially when it comes to institutionalized practices in today’s political, economic and social circumstances. In this respect, the concept of libraries as commons is a very specific task, and it is the intention of this study to understand the different perspectives and challenges in relation to what this concept presupposes and entails. The focus of the study are libraries as educational commons – the role of the community, the shaping of common spaces, physical as well as digital ones, and possibilities to organize and manage respectively.
