sifrmu // WYSIWYNTK (2022)
By bani haykalFrom personal to public machines, sifrmu and its sub-projects look into what it means to consider the implications of humans and machines as a hybrid, in relation to an ever-expanding network of sensors and data aggregators in the city.
In this project, WYSIWYNTK (What You See is What You Need To Know) – a spinoff of the acronym WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get), is a speculative exercise on encrypting data as poetry.
A short film about algorithmic bias through the lens of the Malay language is presented alongside an interactive work comprising a mechanical keyboard with sifrmu program installed as a multichannel set up consisting of 2 screens and a speaker panel. It looks at human-machine intimacies through the frame/ process of encryption.
Together, WYSIWYNTK speculates on augmenting the ways our personal data is registered/processed, rendering the desired data redundant in what it could potentially open up to in terms of monestisation. In thinking about how data is used and aggregated in smart cities, WYSIWYNTK proposes a counter measure in the way an individual's data production is encrypted prior to being collected.
