Hardly any technological development is followed more closely in the educational sector than artificial intelligence. While AI methods clearly show tremendous potential in various fields of educational research and practice, they are criticized from various angles. After a brief introduction and some definitions, this paper outlines traditional as well as current applications of AI methods in education. It presents some case studies of AI learning, teaching and testing processes with a focus on applications in language acquisition and arranges them in a classification framework.
The talk concludes with a discussion of the opportunities and risks of using AI for educational purposes.
