Born in Karl Marx Stadt (now Chemnitz) in 1984, Jan Soldat has a degree in film and television directing from Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg. His documentary short Be Loved about sexual and emotional relationships between men and dogs premiered at Berlinale Shorts in 2010. In 2012, his documentary short Law and Order about the sadomasochistic fetishes of two elderly men premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale and was subsequently shown at over a hundred festivals worldwide. His graduation film The Incomplete won the CineMAXXI Award for best short film at the Rome Film Festival in 2013. His first documentary feature, Prison System 4614 premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlinale in 2015. Soldat has worked on more than 90 films and is also an editor, cinematographer, and script consultant.
