Hack Ur Culture Opening Ceremony Host Thando Sibiya

Thando Sibiya is a graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand and is currently working as a freelance broadcaster and social media coordinator at SuperSport International and Multichoice respectively. Thando is currently working towards obtaining a C1 certificate in French and aim to merge her background in International Relations, Political Sciences, Language and, Broadcasting towards gaining admission into the FIFA Master in Management, Law and Humanities of Sport program towards offering learned and sustainable  innovations within the complex worlds of sport

Opening Speech by Klaus Krischok

Klaus Krischok has been the director of the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg, South Africa since 2019 and enjoys the challenging task of also being the regional director for 15 institutes in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Trevor Stuurman is an award winning contemporary multimedia visual artist, AFDA graduate with a BA (Hons) motion picture & live performance who sees the world through his creative lens and finds beauty in that which reminds him of home - A place that is imbued with colour, love and belonging that reflects Africa. Ever since he burst onto the creative scene scooping the Elle Style Reporter Title in 2012, Trevor has easily cemented himself as a creative force to be reckoned with.

Hackathon Rules with Kgololo Lekoma

Kgololo Lekoma is the co-founder of digital start up Credipple. He currently leads the product and sales departments within Credipple and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and financial management service from the University of Pretoria.

The discussion will focus on cultural institutions and the opportunities they have in regard to the digitization of their archives, as well as strategies and challenges in making those data accessible for broader audiences. Key questions are: Why is it important especially for cultural institutions to make their archives accessible and participate in processes of sharing and collective creation? What challenges and opportunities are connected with this?

In this panel discussion we look to explore the different ways in which cultural heritage education can be reimagined and transformed to be more attractive and exciting for younger audiences. This panel looks at key insights and challenges from those working at the forefront of the space.

#5WomenArtists and curating gender responsive university art collections

“#5WomenArtists is a campaign that calls attention to the fact that women have not been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses.” This panel discussion explores how university curators can ensure that future cultural heritage collections are inclusive, diverse and offer true representation of the communities they aim to represent.

Guest Lecture delivered by Chao Tayiana

Chao Tayiana is a Kenyan digital heritage specialist and digital humanities scholar. With a background in computer science and a life-long passion for history, her work primarily focuses on the application of technology in the preservation, engagement and dissemination of African heritage and culture. She is the founder of African Digital Heritage a non-profit organisation that seeks to encourage a more critical and holistic approach to the design and implementation of digital solutions within African cultural heritage. She is also a co-founder of the Museum of British Colonialism where she leads digital engagement and a co-founder of the Open Restitution Africa project.

Guest Lecture delivered by Manenga Mungandi

Manenga is a mobile applications developer who has worked at 22Seven: An app that gives South African insights on how they spend their money. From smart categorisation to alerting them about suspicious transactions. He now works at Luno: a cryptocurrency wallet and exchange serving 5 million customers across 40 countries in 4 languages. When he isn't making apps, he's taking photos or trading bitcoins.

Blessing Xaba is a South African actor, Journalist and web-video personality.
By 16 he'd begun working on the successful novel-turned film trilogy, Spud, playing the loveable glutton, Sidney ‘Fatty’ Scott. He has since taken on smaller screens, starring in Mzansi Magic’s The Road (2016), SABC 3’s Hard Copy(2017), and Tarryn & Sharon (2019). He is now an undergraduate in Journalism and Media, following the success of his Documentary, Ms Trans Diva which he co-directed for e-TV (2018). Today Blessing is an activist and ARTivist with keen interest in the areas of African Art, Queer Rights, Gender and Sex Liberty as well as Decoloniality.
