Kengchakaj
Kengchakaj is a Bangkok-born, New York-based pianist, improviser, electronic musician, and composer.
Kengchakaj's musical idiom is rooted in the aesthetics and ideologies of Thai culture and African-American music; both are improvisational sound-based practices. He researches the contradictions within and alteration of sound identities, thoughts, experiences, and feelings he calls Lak-Lan(ลักลั่น). By juxtaposing different materials and concepts such as the Thai tuning system, the blues, layered rhythms, electronics, soundscapes, feedback, textures, and emotions, Kengchakaj composes and improvises new music that reflects and translates the concept of Lak-Lan.
The Queens Council Of The Arts and New York City Artist Corps funded his debut solo performance Atta-Anatta อัตตา-อนัตตา, which premiered in October 2021.
