wanhanzan is a creative sound project by New York City-based Malaysian multi-instrumentalist and producer Dzarif Wan.
wanhanzan strives to create experimental and varied sound compositions that engage the imagination and move the spirit. Thematic influences are drawn from personal struggles, everyday life observations, and the questioning of power structures, while the project’s sonic palette is informed by musical genres ranging from ambient to juke, as well as the urban sound environment.
The Liminal Being EP, released in 2018 on Botanic Records, was loosely conceptualized as a sonic autobiography detailing wanhanzan’s personal journey of uprooting from their hometown of Kuala Lumpur and navigating the processes of immigration and establishing a new life in New York.
