This collection of art and writing emerged from watching ‘Rammat Gammat’, a short film by Ajitpal Singh. The movie is a delicate musing on friendship centred around the experience of inequality and a pair of football shoes.
The children - several football players among them - loved the film and in the discussion afterwards, they spoke of friendship surviving mistakes, because the film is about forgiveness.
For the art exercise, focussing on the idea of ‘play’, the children wrote short poems using the chinquapin format, a poetic form that employs a 5-line pattern. The spare use of words that this format encourages allowed the children to play with words and meaningfully express the things they like to do as play, and how that makes them feel.
The artwork shows them as they imagine themselves at play – the mood, the movement, and the experience of beauty that play brings.
