"Apart from exploring the sound of the river and composing the sound into sound art, I became more aware of the condition of the river and its surroundings. I hope that people who see this video will become interested in protecting the environment, especially the rivers in Bandung."

"We also want to show the actual condition of the river and relevant current issues through a new medium. It turns out that the river is dirty and there is garbage, instead of producing unexpected compositions."
Behind the Scenes
Susur Cikapundung
Guru
Guru means “teacher” or “educator" in Indonesian. The band Guru is based in Bandung and includes educators in different areas: Mira Rizki, Bayu P. Pratama, Fahma Rosmansyah, & Gazza Ryandika. The band practices situational performance and uses tonal and atonal sound it has produced. Thus not every performance and composition is fixed—it depends on the situation. The band claims that cooking activities, reading a newspaper, and other daily activities are musical approaches and possibly deliver their ideas about society. They call themselves a “situational band”.
Concept
Susur Cikapundung is an audio-visual project involving the situation and condition of Cikapundung River. It is the basis of a sound composition, the audio recording of the river flow in the City of Bandung. The noisy river waste and the residential activities become the main sound material for GURU to amplify what really happened to this river. No words. These compositions are taken from six locations:
- Watervang Leuwilimoes
- Merdekalio Residential Riverbank
- Cikapundung Riverspot
- Sukaati Dam
- Kelurahaan Mengger Riverbank
The recording also uses handheld recorders to capture air-bound sound, noises from the activities of the residents in the riverside area.
