The “Online Urban Youth Community Platform” concept is the result of a feasibility study for the development of an online platform driven by young people as a participatory tool to maintain the ReThink Urban Spaces project network.

The working process lasted from January to July 2022 and was divided into four phases:

Phase 1: Shaping the Network

This stage aimed at building the network of youth participants who were the main drivers of the process. It is important for the participants to develop a common understanding and vision of the network they will be part of, to see the benefits that each person will receive and understand the reasons and origins of the initiative. Therefore, 2-3 representatives of each RTUS city were asked to join the process and together design the network model. Important questions were asked to the participants: Why is a youth network is important? What kind of network do you envision? Who would you like to network with? How important is an online tool to maintain your network? As a result, 12 young people took part in this process.

Phase 2: Focus Group Study

Creating and operating a network is complex and delicate. Many issues need be taken into consideration such as resources management including funding and people, diversity of ideas, shared responsibility, commitment, etc. Therefore, focus groups were organized for the participants to meet and learn from different actors of various group and network with experiences in network building in the field of urban development, urban community and entrepreneurship. The participants used a “network canvas” to help them to analyze the data collected during the meeting with speakers, covering the following parts: information about the network”, internal management, external support, services offered to third parties, factors to sustain the network and timeline of the network building. In total, the participants met and exchanged with five networks.

Phase 3: Designing the Network Mechanism and Platform

After the participants gained a foundational understanding from the network case studies in Phase 2, they began to design their own network based on structured questions. In this process, group discussions were mainly used to create clarity for both for people within the group and for communication with external actors, involving research, design, and writing on the digital canvas to ensure that consensus is reached and each participant is aware of its potential role and responsibility in the network.

Phase 4: Prototyping

From the ideas proposed by the participants in the previous activities, the MORandFARMER team designed a platform mock-up from June to July 2022, based on the concept of the platform proposed by youth as drivers of social issues into youth policy making and developing youth potential through youth network linkage and a group of interested people who want to take action change the city together.

The structure of the platform would include the following sections:
  • Registration: To become a member of the network
  • Introduction: Goals and missions of the network
  • Cities: Description of the cities within the network
  • Topics: Introduction of the issues on urban development and social aspects
  • Network: Information about each network in each city
  • Projects: Projects led by each network
  • Knowledge: Information data from various events such as seminar, research or projects
  • Events: Activities and events by the network
  • Policy: Policy data
  • Urban data collection: Research based data
It remains to be seen whether funding for such an online platform can be secured, but it is a point that the RTUS youth network will pursue in dialog with potential stakeholders from municipal and CSO side post-project.
