We used to see a library as simply a space where people can read, use or borrow books and other items.

In fact, in the 21st century, a library has evolved from that common perception to a versatile space that offers a wide range of activities and services. Today, modern libraries are often not only places of learning and work, but also places of encounter and enjoyment. Libraries offer readings, workshops, cultural events, creative workspaces and much more to meet the diverse needs and interests of the community. The library has thus become a dynamic centre of knowledge, culture and social exchange.

On 9th October at 6pm, Ms Anja Flicker, the Director of Essen City Library, will give us an online presentation on how Essen City Library has developed its customer-oriented services over the years.

About Ms. Anja Flicker:
Anja Flicker gained her first professional and management experience in the library system of the Munich City Library. In 2001, she moved to the private sector, where she worked as a knowledge manager for a total of eight years and was honoured as ‘Knowledge Manager of the Year’ in 2003. In January 2010, Flicker took over the management of the nationally recognised and award-winning Würzburg City Library.

She describes her work as focusing on the areas of personnel and knowledge management, innovative and strategic organisational development and consistent customer orientation. Anja Flicker has excellent expertise, a large network and international contacts in the public library sector. The Würzburg City Library made a name for itself when it opened a new branch at the end of May 2019, which was designed by the renowned Dutch architect and design guide Aat Vos. The foundations for this were laid using the ‘DesignThinking for Libraries’ method. This approach now sets the standard for an approach with citizen participation. The branch operates according to the ‘open library’ concept, which means that the branch is open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., regardless of staff working hours.
