Heinz Emigholz: “Filmography as Autobiography”

The 16th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival is showing a retrospective of Heinz Emigholz, the “master of architectural film”. Under the title “Filmography as Autobiography”, 14 of his documentary films will be shown. At the same time, the exhibition “Oblique Vision” with over 600 drawings by the artist and filmmaker can be seen in cooperation with the Goyang artist residency program Haeum. Under the title “Drawing Masterclass: Inside the world of Artist's Dreams and Unconscious”, a drawing masterclass with Heinz Emigholz will also take place on September 28, 2024.

Heinz Emigholz's diverse oeuvre includes films, drawings and numerous texts. He initially trained as a typographer and illustrator and studied philosophy and literature. Towards the end of the 1960s, he finally turned to film, a passion that he continues to pursue to this day. He is best known for his often-experimental architectural films, which often deal with the history of architectural modernism.

With the support of the Goethe-Institut Korea, the 16th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival will show Heinz Emigholz's early key work Arrowplane (1974) and the worldwide premiere of his latest film The Suit (2024) as well as selected works from the series “Architecture as Autobiography”, “Streetscapes” and “Photography and beyond”.

Arrowplane (1974)
In Arrowplane, three landscapes are depicted in a 180-degree panorama using panning shots. These include a hilly meadow near Horneburg in Lower Saxony, a North Sea beach in Denmark and buildings in Hamburg. One of the film's unique features is its shooting technique: The sequences were shot with a fixed tripod, with the camera angle being shifted by 3 degrees in each case to create the 180-degree panorama. In addition, the sequence of the individual images were mixed with each other. This creates the illusion of a multi-layered landscape that could not exist in reality.

The Suit (2024)
In the sequel to The Lobby (2020), John Erdman returns to his role as an “Old White Male”. In the sci-fi comedy, he meets a German cinematographer and a robot version of himself from the past. Together they discuss topics such as the absurdity of the human existence and the uncertainty of the future. Questions about architecture, nutrition and a possible apocalypse are also addressed.

The 16th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival will take place from September 26 to October 2, 2024 in Goyang. In addition to the works of Heinz Emigholz, around 120 current documentary films from Germany and abroad will be shown. More information about the program can be found on the official website of the festival.
