Reciprocal state visits and increased cooperation with the Indonesian government in the area of German language teaching form the beginning of this stage of the journey. A growing number of cultural events take place with renowned artists, culture professionals and literary figures from Indonesia and Germany. One of the Goethe-Instituts in Indonesia, however, is closed during this time.

Dr. Veronica Carstens, the wife of the Federal President Prof. Dr. Karl Carstens, visits the Goethe Institute in Jakarta.

Goethe-Institut Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya conduct language courses in cooperation with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) of the Ministry of Research and Technology. The participants of these courses were then sent to study in Germany.

The wayang orang playgroup Bharata is sponsored by the Goethe-Institut Jakarta to go to Cologne, West Germany, to perform at the pantomime festival there.

Drama performance
 "Kunjungan Nyonya Tua“

The show “Kunjungan Nyonya Tua,” which ran from 18-22 December at the Ketjil Theatre, was the final program of 1991. This three-act drama was written by the Swiss writer Friedrich Reinhold Dürrenmatt and directed by Arifin C. Noer. It was funded by the Goethe-Institut Jakarta in cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland in Indonesia.

1994

The Düsseldorf Marionette Theater of Germany played at Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta on 26 and 27 May, as a lively addition to the Indonesian-European Puppet Week. They performed stories such as “Der Mond” (The Moon) and “Die Zauberflöte” (The Magic Flute). The love story of "Die Zauberflöte" was accompanied by music from the opera of the same name by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The Goethe-Institut Surabaya closes due to German federal budget cuts.

1997

A number of employees from the former Goethe-Institut Surabaya founded the Goethe-Stiftung-Surabaya and collaborated with the Goethe-Institut to open the Goethe-Zentrum in Surabaya. Some years later, in 2012, Wisma Jerman was founded in coordination with EKONID, Goethe-Institut and the German Embassy.

 Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen

Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, a chamber music ensemble from Bremen, performed four orchestral compositions on Tuesday 2 March at the Jakarta Arts Building. Tony Prabowo's “Requiem for Strings” was performed under the direction of Rodrigo Blumenstock, among others.
