Over ten days in August 2022 44 men were killed during a strike at the Lonmin platinum-mining operation at Marikana; 34 of these were strikers killed by police on 16 August, in the “Marikana Massacre”. The Marikana Outreach project is an extension of the ongoing 10th anniversary commemoration programme.
This pop-up version in Xolobeni will include an exhibition (combining artworks by family members of deceased men who participated in art making workshops with Khulumani Support Group; photographs and text from the decade-long After Marikana slow journalism project by Paul Botes and Niren Tolsi, and forensic evidence submitted to the Marikana Commission), art-making workshops conducted by Khulumani, a film screening of Miners Shot Down, a theatre production, discussions with massacre survivors like Mzoxolo Magididwana, family members of the deceased including children, widows and parents.
