Stellungnahme zu Zukiswa Wanners Rückgabe der Goethe-Medaille

Die südafrikanische Autorin, Verlegerin und Journalistin Zukiswa Wanner erhielt 2020 die Goethe-Medaille, das offizielle Ehrenzeichen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für Verdienste um die deutsche Sprache und den internationalen Kulturaustausch. Frau Wanner hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten für die Stärkung und die internationale Vernetzung der afrikanischen Literatur- und Verlagsszene eingesetzt. In dieser Rolle hat sie auch wiederholt mit dem Goethe-Institut zusammengearbeitet.
Wir nehmen die heutige Rückgabe der Goethe-Medaille durch Zukiswa Wanner zur Kenntnis. In ihrer Begründung steht nach Meinung von Frau Wanner die Bundesregierung mit ihrer Unterstützung Israels erneut auf der „falschen Seite“ eines Genozids – nach dem Holocaust und den Kolonialverbrechen Deutschlands in Namibia und Tansania. Angesichts dieser Auffassungen zur Politik der Bundesregierung ist Frau Wanners Entscheidung, die Goethe-Medaille zurückzugeben, konsequent.
Das Goethe-Institut lehnt eine solche Relativierung des Holocaust ab. Sehr kritisch sehen wir auch, dass in Frau Wanners Erklärung die Gewalt der Hamas und die Situation der israelischen Geiseln keinerlei Erwähnung finden. Gleichzeitig erkennen wir an, dass in anderen Teilen der Welt vor dem Hintergrund anderer historischer Erfahrungen auch anders auf den Nahostkonflikt geschaut wird.
Das Goethe-Institut ist seit mehr als 70 Jahren der Praxis des Dialogs verpflichtet, des gegenseitigen Zuhörens und auch der Kontroverse, wenn Standpunkte nicht übereinstimmen. Dies gilt auch für den seit Jahrzehnten währenden Nahostkonflikt. Das Goethe-Institut setzt sich für einen Austausch unterschiedlicher Perspektiven – auch zu dieser Thematik – ein. Wir brauchen den Austausch, um Verständnis für andere Positionen zu entwickeln und Verständigung zu ermöglichen. Grundlage für diesen Dialog ist die Ablehnung von Menschenfeindlichkeit, Antisemitismus, Rassismus und Gewaltverherrlichung.
Statement regarding Zukiswa Wanner's return of the Goethe Medal
In 2020, Zukiswa Wanner, a South African author, editor, and journalist, received the Goethe Medal, which is the official decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition for outstanding services to international cultural exchange and the teaching of the German language. Over the last decades Mrs. Wanner has advocated for strengthening and expanding the international networks of the African literary and publishing scene. In this role she has worked repeatedly with the Goethe-Institut.
We are aware that Zukiswa Wanner returned her Goethe Medal today. In her statement Mrs. Wanner expresses her opinion that the German government, through its support of Israel, again stands on the “wrong side” of a genocide—as in the Holocaust and during the German colonial crimes in Namibia and Tanzania. Considering her view of the Federal Republic’s policies, Mrs. Wanner’s decision to return her Goethe Medal is consistent.
The Goethe-Institut rejects such a relativisation of the Holocaust. We are also very critical of the fact that Mrs. Wanner’s statement omits the violence used by Hamas and the situation of the Israeli hostages. At the same time, we recognise that the conflict in the Middle East is viewed differently in other parts of the world against the background of different historical experiences.
For over 70 years, the Goethe-Institut has been committed to dialogue, to listening to one another, and to allowing controversy even when points of view remain in conflict. This holds true as well for the conflict in the Middle East over the last decades. The Goethe-Institut advocates for open exchange of a variety of viewpoints—on this topic as well. We need exchange for developing an understanding of different perspectives and for making understanding possible. Rejecting misanthropy, antisemitism, racism, and the glorification of violence is the basis for such a dialogue.
