Nyege Nyege Festival / Boutiq Foundation (Uganda), CTM Festival / DISK – Initiative Bild & Ton e.V. (Germany)

A special multi-part commission, supported by Goethe-Institut Coproduction Fund, takes place through 2019 and 2020 as part of an ongoing exchange between Nyege Nyege (Uganda) and CTM Festival (Germany). The project highlights an extremely rare giant Ugandan xylophone, the embaire, through two commissioned works. German-based musician Jasmine Guffond and light artist Theresa Baumgartner, and Indonesian artists Gabber Modus Operandi feat Wahono will each take part in residencies hosted
by Nyege Nyege at their Studios in Kampala, where they will work with the Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe to create works that bring this traditional instrument into resonance with new, global contexts. These commissions are possible thanks to the work by German sound researcher Sven Kacirek , who refurbished the embaire, allowing for an output of both acoustic and MIDI notes by the xylophone performers.

The premiere of Gabber Modus Operandi feat Wahono x Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe will take place at CTM Festival 2020 in Berlin. The collaboration between Nakibembe and Jasmine Guffond will premiere in Kamapala in May 2020, before both projects will be presented again – now with a light component developed by Theresa Baumgartner – at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in November 2020 in Berlin.
