Well prepared for life in Germany
Our core competences
German proficiency and good preparation for migration are key to ensure that immigrants experience a successful and sustainable integration. The Goethe-Institut offers a diverse programme of learning and information programmes available to people in all relevant countries in terms of skilled worker migration. In cooperation with the twelve locations in Germany, the worldwide network enables skilled workers to be supported throughout the process of migration and integration.
The Goethe-Institut supports the German government’s Fachkräftestrategie der Bundesregierung (strategy for securing the supply of skilled workers). In our commitment to migration of skilled workers from abroad, we believe it’s very important to create a strong network involving relevant actors at home and abroad. We contribute our specialist expertise in high-level committees and work in close consultation with partners such as the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (Deutsche Industrie- und Handelskammer; DIHK), the Chambers of Industry and Commerce Abroad (Auslandshandelskammern; AHKs), and the Employers’ Association for the Care Sector (Arbeitgeberverband Pflege; AGVP).

Four areas of action in which the Goethe-Institut makes a special contribution to supporting skilled worker immigration:
Our German courses offer an active and needs-based approach to learning that meets high quality standards. A particular role is played by training in hand-on communication situations, to develop realistic expectations of life in Germany. The exams and certificates awarded by the Goethe-Institut to provide evidence of German proficiency are recognised worldwide.
We have been supporting immigrants from their origin country right up to their arrival in the German integration systems for several decades. During the course of the most recent pre-integration project, which ran for two years, more than 33,000 people benefited from region-specific and intercultural training, advice and learning support programmes. The web portal “Mein Weg nach Deutschland” has 700,000 page hits per year and provides useful information about living and working in Germany in 30 languages, as well as free German exercises. Six Welcome Coaches support immigrants after they have arrived in Germany. They offer face-to-face help in the initial orientation phase and liaise with advice centres and authorities.
Outstanding teaching is only possible if appropriately trained teachers are available. The Goethe-Institut implements a broad-based policy for recruitment, qualification and professional development of German teachers to ensure effective use of the language course and exam capacities for skilled workers to achieve qualifications.
Goethe-Institutes abroad encourage the establishment of German as a Foreign Language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache; GFL/DaF) at schools in the origin countries as well as qualification and skills development of DaF teachers in the state-run education system worldwide. With their commitment they perform crucial preparatory work to make Germany seem attractive to young people.
