Year of Germany in Mexico An Alliance for the Future
After twelve months with more than 1,400 events, the Year of Germany in Mexico has come to an end. Last weekend’s AleMANÍAfest drew more than 35,000 visitors including Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“Our goal was to modernise the image of Germany and form an alliance for the future. When I look at the events of today alone, I believe that we have succeeded in this together formidably,” said Johannes Ebert, CEO of the Goethe-Institut, during the AleMANÍAfest, which concluded the Year of Germany in Mexico. Rudolf de Baey, director of the Goethe-Institut Mexico, added, “With our exhibitions, concerts, film series and countless other events in over fifty Mexican cities, we have reached an incredibly broad audience and aroused great interest in Germany.” The co-ordinator of the Year of Germany, Jenny Mügel, thanked the Mexican partners as well as the approximately four and a half million visitors to the more than 1,400 events of the Year of Germany.
German courses and electronic music
Together with Johannes Ebert, Mügel welcomed Angela Merkel to the Pop-Up Tour on Saturday morning. There, the chancellor was met with a kind of “condensed Year of Germany.” In four containers, German courses and electronic music, storytellers, cinema, workshops and much more were offered. At the beginning of the year, the pop-up tour coordinated by Nathalie Dittombé and Marie-Christine Knop had already visited the cities of Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosí, Puebla and Toluca. The stop in Mexico City was nevertheless something special, not only because of the more than 10,000 visitors in two and a half days, but also because this time Angela Merkel handed over the prizes to the winners of the German-Mexican Science Slam. The Year of Germany in Mexico, which was opened exactly one year ago by then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has thus come to its successful conclusion.
