M(e)&M(other)
Dance film with German and English subtitles adapted for deaf and people with a hearing impairment “Being an artist and mother is not a fixed identity.” Joanna Sokolowski
What if motherhood would become a part of our career?
The short dance film “M(e)&M(other)” looks at the roles of female artist and mother - intertwined, compared and evaluated. In the world of dance, where the body operates as the main instrument of expression, motherhood is still discussed with vague undertones. Raimonda Gudavičiūtė, who lives and works in Frankfurt am Main (Germany), speaks openly about the complex internal conflict of being a caring mother and an active freelance dance artist.
Table for One, Please
Table for One, Please is a short film that emerges from rehearsals for the dance theater piece Life in this House is Over by director Samantha Shay. Exploring the social awkwardness of grief, and inspired by the writing of Anton Chekhov, the project gathers current and former artists of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, as well as the Grotowski Institute-based physical theater company Teatr ZAR, as a reflection on the lineages of Polish Jerzy Grotowski and German Pina Bausch, their relationship and how their work resonates today.
What If
The starting point for this work was a short text by the American author Claudia Rankine, taken from her book “Just Us”. C. Rankine has become known for her precise observations of everyday racism in the U.S. She focuses on what she calls “micro-aggressions” – a very subtle racism that never becomes loud but is deeply rooted in the thinking and feeling of large parts of the American population.
For this video work, we have transposed the written text into a spoken-word performance, combining it with gestures, movements and the music of Darian Thomas.
The performance takes place in a monochrome space to increase concentration on the performer. The 3D graphics by Ukrainian artist Nadya Plyamko translate the content and mood of the words into visual associations.
This work is the first production of the company employing the Motion Capture technique.
