A HIDDEN LIFE tells the story of a largely unknown hero. The Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) steadfastly refuses to fight for the Wehrmacht. Even in the face of impending execution, he remains convinced until the end that he has to follow his conscience. He is supported by his deep faith and unshakable love for his wife (Fani Valerie Pachner) and the three children.
August Diehl and Valerie Pachner embody Franz Jägerstätter and his wife Fani emotionally stirring, with a sensitive presence and passionate dedication. Cinematographer Jörg Widmer created pictures of poetic elegance. Terrence Malick's inexhaustible interest in the inner struggle of his main character makes A HIDDEN LIFE an allegorical resistance drama about courage and the fight against evil.

Terrence Malick
was born in Ottawa, Illinois, and grew up in Texas and Oklahoma. He worked for Newsweek, Life and The New Yorker and taught philosophy at MIT before moving to the American Film Institute. He is a screenwriter and director of BADLANDS (1973), DAYS OF HEAVEN (1978), THE THIN RED LINE (1998), THE NEW WORLD, THE TREE OF LIFE (2011), TO THE WONDER (2012), KNIGHT OF CUPS (2015), SONG TO SONG (2017) and VOYAGE OF TIME (2016).
“A Hidden Life” is an intimate epic about the immense strength required for resistance, and the courage that it takes for one to hold fast to their virtue during a crisis of faith, and in a world that may never reward them for it. It is, without question, the best thing that Malick has made since “The Tree of Life.”
