Move on Screen

Edition 2024: Dance (And) Film

The MOVE ON SCREEN program explores the intersection between movement and technology. Presented in collaboration between the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region and the French Institute in the UAE, it examines the various aspects of the relationship between these two territories.

In its first edition of 2024, dedicated to Dance (and) Film, the program will invite the general audiences to dance-related film screenings and offer aspiring professionals a dance workshop and a film masterclass.

The feature film program will play with the theme of heritage through the lenses of classics, reinvention, and contemporaneity. It will present the work of choreographer Pina Bausch and showcase an urban dance choreography at the baroque opera Les Indes Galantes in Paris. The further selection of films will touch on themes of dance as a profession, dance in everyday life, and dance as a source of personal or social conflict -across the genres including ballet, contemporary, and hip-hop.

In a nod to heritage and legacy, the first-ever program of UAE-related short dance films will be presented to the audience, celebrating the country's artists and creatives who are at the forefront of this niche art form.

MOVE ON SCREEN will take place in Dubai and Sharjah from October 28 to November 28 at various locations, such as Sharjah Performing Arts Academy, Cinema Akil at 25H Hotel, and Alliance Française Dubai.

The program is free for the public.

Focus: Pina Bausch / Screenings and Workshop

This year's program will have a focus on the work of the renowned German choreographer Pina Bausch (1940 - 2009), recognised as one of the most significant choreographers of our time. With her choreography, Pina Bausch revolutionised modern dance and was one of the most important contributors to modern Tanztheater in the 20th century.

The audiences in Dubai will have the exciting opportunity to delve into the captivating world of Pina Bausch through two compelling documentaries: "Pina", directed by Wim Wenders, and "Dancing Pina", by Florian Heinzen-Ziob. Furthermore, Sharjah Performing Arts Academy students will have the invaluable chance to enrich their theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. Throughout a 3-day workshop, they will be immersed in Pina Bausch's work methods, learn about Tanztheater, and master the pieces of her choreographies.

This workshop will be conducted by Jean Laurent Sasportes, a dancer and choreographer who was a principal dancer with the company from 1979 to 1997 and has continued to be involved with the repertoire as a guest dancer and mentor.
Jean Laurent Sasportes, born in Casablanca in 1952, was a soloist and permanent member of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch from 1979 to 1996 and continued as a guest soloist until 2017. During his time with Pina Bausch, he became known for his expressive style and unique interpretation of her works. Since then, he has worked as a freelance dancer, actor, director, and choreographer, contributing to various dance and theatre projects worldwide.
