German Careers Day 2024

Welcome to the German Careers Day, an event dedicated to guiding and inspiring high school and university students in Australia to explore professional opportunities and the advantages of learning German. The event is jointly organized by the Goethe-Institut, the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and supported by the Victorian Government.

We are thrilled to commence this event with a warm welcome from Prof Birgit Lang, Professor in German Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne and
Christiane Weller, Associate Professor, European Languages in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University.

Following this welcome, we are honoured to present a keynote speech by Maria Roitman, Senior Advisor, International Research Strategy at The University of Melbourne which will set the stage for an enlightening day ahead. As we move forward, the program unfolds into an array of presentations and discussions on different topics.

Further information on the sections can be found below. Throughout the day, you'll have the opportunity to interact with these experts, ask questions, and immerse yourself in the diverse opportunities the German language offers. Campus Schnitzeljagd

In this fun Schnitzeljagd students will explore the beautiful campus of the University of Melbourne by finding a series of locations and answering questions! 

Time: flexible
Location: Starting point outside Arts West Building

Theatre production: Staging German

University of Melbourne students from the German Program perform short scenes which they developed based on texts by Franz Kafka. Displaying a wide range of Kafka's work, the play includes scenes from "Der Gruftwächter" (Kafka's only drama), "Der Process" (his famous novel), and "Ein Landarzt" (a short prose text from the collection with the same title). The performance commemorates Kafka's death a hundred years ago in 1924 and showcases the diverse abilities of our students from acting to costume design and scene development. The performance will be in German with German and English subtitles. Time: 2-3 pm

Discover Your Future: Interactive Workshops

These 60-minute interactive workshops, you’ll engage with fellow students, practice your German in a supportive and dynamic environment, and discover which job suits you best through various activities. Experience hands-on learning that makes language practice fun and effective.
