Silent Film with Live Soundtrack
KinoKonzert 07: Ashley Hribar | Dr. Caligari in Brisbane
100 years of Caligari
100 years after its original release The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari maintains its spellbound reputation, as a result of its dreamlike narrative style and landmark expressionist set design. For its KinoKonzert series the Goethe-Institut will screen a new, digitally restored 4K copy of the film, along with an original soundtrack composed and performed live by Ashley Hribar.
Considered a quintessential work of German expressionist cinema, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari tells the story of a deranged hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders on his behalf. Created by Robert Wiene in 1920, the film is widely recognised as a precursor of psychological thriller films, and a metaphor of the horror of tyrannical political power.
Ashley Hribar is an Australian born pianist-composer who has lived mostly in Germany in recent years. Thanks to countless tours and recordings, he has developed an international reputation as a versatile musician embracing classical as much as contemporary electronic music and cross-disciplinary art forms. Ashley’s compositions are poly-stylistic collages often employing extended performance techniques, voice and electronics.
