As part of the 28th edition of the Ecrans Noirs international film festival (2024), the Ecrans Noirs Association and the Goethe-Institut Kamerun are organizing a scriptwriting and directing competition for short fiction films as part of the ‘10 days for 1 film’ operation.

The aim of the competition is to encourage writing, directing and film production in order to cultivate creativity and contribute to raising awareness.

  • The competition is open to young Cameroonians aged 30 or under who are interested in a career in the film industry.
  • Films should be no longer than 10 minutes.
  • The theme chosen for the 2024 edition is linked to Franz Kafka's ‘Metamorphosis’, the famous short story by this author.
  • Each candidate in the competition may submit only one script.
  • Deadline for entries: 06 September 2024.
  COMPETITION RULES
  • Following an initial selection phase, the authors of the 3 most relevant projects will take part in a rewriting workshop.
  • These three projects will receive funding of one million CFA francs each, as well as a complete technical team to produce their film.
  • Post-production is the responsibility of the 3 finalists, who will be able to use the facilities of ISCAC (Higher training institute for cinema and audiovisual professions in Central Africa)
  • The films produced will be shown at the 28th Ecrans Noirs festival.
1. The objective

The aim of the competition is to identify promising young filmmakers and to encourage creative filmmaking based on the text ‘The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka.

2. Entry requirements
  • The interpretation/adaptation of the theme is free but must be inspired by Franz Kafka's short novel ‘The Metamorphosis’ (1915). The text is available online and in audio on various platforms, including YouTube.
  • Candidates must be Cameroonian and no more than 30 years old on 06.09.2024.
  • Candidates may only submit one script.
  • The film must not be longer than 10 minutes.
  • Although the short film may be shot in a Cameroonian national language, the script must be written in French or English.
  • The film must be shot in the Centre region of Cameroon.
  • The proposed project must be an original interpretation of Franz Kafka's work.
  • Winners of previous editions of the competition are not eligible to apply.  
3. Applications (online only)

All applications must be submitted online via: www.goethe.de/cameroun no later than 06.09.2024 and must include:
  1. The candidate's CV in PDF format, Times New Roman, font 12, single-spaced.
  2.  A scan of the applicant's National Identity Card or passport in PDF format
  3. Synopsis (10 lines maximum; PDF format)
  4. A statement of intent (maximum 1 page; PDF format)
  5. A dialogue continuity (8 pages max, Font: Courier, Size: 12, PDF format).
4. Results

The results of the first selection phase for the 10 most relevant projects will be published on 27.09.2024 and available on the Goethe-Institut and Ecrans Noirs Facebook pages. A pitching session will then be organized to select the 3 (three) best projects. The authors of the 3 selected projects will be invited to take part in a rewriting workshop from 30.09.2024 to 04.10.2024 in Yaoundé. Following this workshop, the three projects will be produced between 07.10.2024 and 21.10.2024 in Yaoundé.

5. Production and post-production
The 3 projects selected will receive technical support for production.
Funding of one (1) million CFA francs will be made available to each of them.

The production team will be provided by the organizers. Filming and editing will take place from 07 to 21.10.2024 in a location of the director's choice in Yaounde or its suburbs. Films must be completed, including post-production, by 21.10.2024.

6. Prizes and awards

The 3 short films produced will be evaluated by a jury during a screening session and an audition of each author. The results will be announced during the Ecrans Noirs 2024 festival. The director of the best of the 3 short films will benefit from a film training course in Germany during 2025 (subject to obtaining a visa).
