Network meeting Sekem

In light of Egypt’s hosting of the COP 27 global climate conference and the impact of climate change on the countries of the Mediterranean Basin, including Egypt, Goethe-Institut graduates have organized a networking event for the alumni interested in climate issues of the Goethe-Institut projects "Civic Education," "Gender Awareness," and "Focus: Society and Diversity".

The networking event was held at SEKEM’s Farm in Belbeis, Sharkia Governorate, from August 24 to August 27, 2022. It aimed to give participants the opportunity to adapt their gained experiences and methodologies working on civic education and gender to awareness-raising efforts concerning climate change and its effects on various aspects of life. It also sought to support participants in finding solutions through networking with one another and with other stakeholders. Among the voluntary participants in this networking event were experts from different organisations such as DEDI – Danish Egyptian Dialogue Initiative and Banlastic Egypt, as well as independent climate activists.

The participants spent four days in nature on the farm in an attempt to live as sustainably and efficiently as possible while using the least amount of plastic. They received a tour of the farm and took part in a number of workshops covering topics like the state of the climate crisis in Egypt and, governmental efforts to address it, networking with climate activists around the world, and sustainable event management. They moreover attended screenings of two environmental documentaries from the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Initiative's Ecokino project, produced in collaboration with Banlastic Egypt. Finally, the participants engaged in networking with one another to come up with ideas for existing projects or to develop new initiatives and projects for them to work on in the future.
