Digital Arabic-Language Repository on Gender

Internet users who embark on a quest for information on gender in the Arabic language, realise very quickly that there is little content available. Wiki-Gender, a collaborative and participatory knowledge platform, is here to change this. It diligently collects, adds and amends information on gender and women’s issues in Arabic, and seeks to boost the discourse on these crucial topics. Wiki-Gender is available to the public free of charge, and thus constitutes a significant step to raise awareness, enhance knowledge and distribute information more widely on everything gender.

Wiki-Gender began in December 2016 to archive, integrate, and document text material and other content on gender and women’s issues, ranging from academic over artistic to journalistic in style. Besides its function as a knowledge platform, Wiki-Gender also documents activities, groups, initiatives, projects and organisations concerned with gender and women’s issues, and promotes the exchange of experience between the various actors in the two fields. Being publicly accessible and free of charge, it seeks to stimulate the discussion of questions about gender and equality amongst Arabic-speaking audiences.

As an initiative of the Goethe-Institut, Wiki-Gender is also supported by the Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF). Contents are generated thanks to contributions from many different gender and women’s rights organisations, such as Ikhtiyar and from individual researchers in the field. Wiki-Gender is based on the work of volunteers and open to anyone who wishes to join the project.

The Wiki Gender is a project of the Goethe-Institut and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
