Inaugurated on 14 June 1962 as the German Cultural Institute by then Emperor Haile Selassie and Ambassador Paulus von Stolzmann, Goethe-Institut Äthiopien marks its 60th anniversary in 2022. As one of the oldest branches of the institute in the African continent, Goethe-Institut Äthiopien has a wealth of experience working with a range of partners and civil society across Ethiopia and Germany to foster cultural cooperation and exchange between the two countries.nt partners.

Apart from promoting knowledge of the German language and serving as a window into contemporary Germany, the institute is a perpetual promoter of arts, culture and cultural dialogue. Its global reach further allows for cross border collaboration across Africa and Europe.

Additionally, its modern teaching facilities and library services together with its content creation and presentation spaces make the Goethe-Institut Äthiopien a space ideal for students, academics, artists and creatives alike.

With the institute as a whole having celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2021 and with the 60th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut Äthiopien now approaching, a series of public activities are scheduled throughout 2022 to reflect on past achievements and future endeavors together with past and current partners.
