Institutional Dramaturgy, Politics, and Conflict in the 19th and 20th Centuries

The “Dramaturgies of War” symposium marks the publication of Dr Anselm Heinrich’s new book on “Theatre in Europe under German Occupation” (Routledge). Taking its cue from this publication the symposium will take a broader look at how theatres reflected, supported, critiqued, pre-emptied conflicts. 24 papers from international scholars have been accepted and the programme is currently being finalised. The temporal focus will be on the 19th and 20th centuries and a diverse range of papers will cover the following aspects:
-discourses around the function of the performing arts during conflicts/war -the role of the dramaturg in these discourses and the development of institutionalised dramaturgy in particular
-modes of communication between theatres, audiences and the general public
-the role of specific dramaturgs/playwrights/companies/plays/modes of performance vis-à-vis conflict and war
-cash, resources, bums on seats: external factors impacting on theatres and their repertoires during times of conflict
-theatre as a site for education and propaganda – but equally:
-theatre as a site for opposition and resistance
