Guided Tour - Discovery Site: Goethe Omirou. Pointwise Archival Convergences

An installation by Giannis Delagrammatikas and Ino Varvariti

On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, Goethe-Institut Athen focuses on its analogue cultural archive, and presents the art installation Discovery Site: Goethe Omirou. Pointwise Archival Convergences by Giannis Delagrammatikas and Ino Varvariti

In an effort to activate its archive, Goethe-Institut Athen invited the two Greek artists to „browse“ its archives. They created a work that maps the cultural life and at the same time captures the social reality of the last seventy years. It unfolds the history of Athens and Greece – always in relation to the world historical context.

Photographs, programs, invitations, brochures, publications, catalogs from cultural events that the Institute (co)organized and/or supported by Goethe-Institut Athen, shed light on its connection with both the local community and institutions internationally. At the same time, they feed and structure the narrative of the two artists.Through a series of archival episodes, the two visual artists attempt, as they underline, “to explore the semantic possibilities and narrative transformations of the organization's cultural archive.”

The installation is hosted in different areas of the building where the Institute is housed today, at 14-16 Omirou Street, and opens to the public on October 13.

The two artists invite visitors to become active participants in their project, and to collect materials that are part of the installation, thus forming their own personal archive. During the exhibition, viewers (of all ages) will have the opportunity to attend group tours led by the artists themselves – until the exhibition closes on January 12, 2023.
