Exhibition on the 60-year anniversary of the city partnership between Kyoto and Cologne

Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa

Three artists of different generations and nationalities, who live and work in Cologne and Kyoto, exhibit their works at Villa Kamogawa. The central questions are about home and identity. The artists will be available to visitors to discuss and to reflect on the mutual perception of Cologne in Germany and Kyoto in Japan and to further ponder the question: “Who are we? Between Myself and 私" (watashi, Japanese for Myself).
 

Satomi Edo Satomi Edo graduated from Kyoto Municipal College of Art in Japan in 1995 with a degree in sculpting and artistic education. In Japan, she lectured in the liberal arts department at Takarazukahigashi High School in Takarazuka for six years. In 2012 she completed a diploma in liberal arts as part of a second-degree program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster, Germany. Since 2017 she is a lecturer in culture in Münster. Satomi Edo has been artistically active since 2006. She has received multiple scholarships for German and international projects and has repeatedly received awards for her work. Currently, she participates in two group exhibitions at Museumsquartier Osnabrück and Museum Schloss Moyland. Her works are presented in public collections at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and the Pfarrzentrum St Josef in Münster.
Ute BartelUte Bartel was born in Halle/Westphalia and lives in Cologne. At Kunstakademie Münster she studied fine arts from 1986-1994 and is a master student of Reiner Ruthenbeck. She has received numerous awards such as: 2021 scholarship of onomato e.V. Düsseldorf; 2017 Scholarship of Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Foundation; 2006 project funding of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz; 2003 Kunstpreis Wesseling; 2nd prize of Kunstverein Wesseling; 1997 Residency Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts Omaha, NE, USA; 1995 Residency of the Kulturfonds Mecklenburg Foundation in Ahrenshoop; 1994 Scholarship of the ministry of education NRW and presented numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. In 2023 her works can be seen at Kunsthalle Trier, DKB in Berlin and at Kunstverein Kleinmachnow.
Yoana Tuzharova*Yoana Tuzharova was born in 1986 in Russe, Bulgaria. She lives and works in Cologne. In 2009 she received an academic degree in Monumental Art in the class of Prof. Dr. Oleg Gochev in Bulgaria. In 2018 she received an academic degree in Liberal Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Münster, Germany, in the class of Prof. Maik Löbbert and Prof. Dirk Löbbert. She has received multiple awards and scholarships. Recently she was awarded the GWK Art Prize 2022. In 2021 she was awarded with the art prize Junge Positionen NRW. She has numerous solo presentations including at Kunstmuseum Celle, Gustav-Lübcke-Museum and Kunstverein Monchengladbach in 2022. She also participated in many group exhibitions such as Kunst im Tunnel, Westfälischer Kunstverein, Kunsthalle Recklinghausen etc. Her works are presented in public collections like LVM-Kunstsammlung and NRW bank Kunstsammlung.

Opening program on Saturday, July 15th
11:00 am- opening ceremony
12:30 pm- Artist talk moderated by Mami Katsuya (Kyoto City Artist in Residence Platform Project Coordinator) with Japanese-English translation
4:00 pm- Workshop for children with a German word game “I’m packing my suitcase and take with me …” (No registration required, free of charge)

The opening is part of the Villa Kamogawa Summer Festival, that will be held on the same day at the villa in Kyoto.



Further program:
Wed July 19th starting at 06:00 pm: guided tour of the exhibition with the artists.
Sat July 22nd starting at 11:00 am: German breakfast at the exhibition. During the breakfast the participants and the artists have a conversation at the table and peel a boiled egg. Using the eggshells, everyone designs a new, individual map of the world.
