KDW: Klub der Weisheit

For this edition of KDW, Klub der Weisheit we have paired Ayodele Olofintuade & Sons of Ubuntu to explore the theme of community as a catalyst for growth. They will be sharing on the concept: Egbe, of indegenous Yoruba ecosystems against the alternative of house music communities which have bloomed in Lagos.

In Yoruba indigenous ecosystems, Olodumare is revered as the supreme being who sustains the fabric of multiple realities and worlds. However, Olodumare works in harmony with other beings, including Ìyàmi (primordial mothers), Èṣù (messenger and trickster god), Irúnmolè (primordial divinities), Òrìṣà, and the ecosystems of both the known and unknown realms. On Earth, known as Ile-Aiye (the planet we inhabit, also regarded as the home of Aiye Akamora), Orí (the head) is considered the personal god or divine essence for each individual. Orí is the entity responsible for guiding the person, referred to as Alasaan (a term from the sacred text Ògúndá Méjì). Alongside Orí, other significant spiritual entities in an individual's community include the Egbe, Òrìṣà, and Irúnmolè. The Egbẹ, or spiritual companions, play an essential role in an individual's well-being and success on Earth. This is because they were present when the person chose their destiny (Orí) and are familiar with the life path selected. They help navigate earthly challenges and offer guidance through life’s complexities.

House music has long been a powerful force for community building, especially in marginalized groups seeking spaces of care, growth, and expression. The music and collective energy foster an atmosphere where individuals can feel safe, celebrated, and connected, creating a sense of belonging. In these spaces, the boundaries between artist and audience dissolve, allowing for shared experiences that promote healing, emotional release, and personal development. House music in its design has not only provided a soundtrack but also a structure for communities centered on mutual support and collective well-being.

About KDW: Klub der Weisheit

At Klub der Weisheit (KDW), libraries and museums across Nigeria become the stage for intimate evenings where writers, artists, activists, and thinkers engage with genre-defying musicians and performance acts. Together, they enter a dynamic dialogue with the audience, exploring ideas on art, culture, and life. These sessions combine performance and conversation, offering a glimpse into their inspirations, creative processes, and ongoing projects.

We invite you to this interactive session and to actively participate in engaging with these ideas. Come curious; come ready to dialouge.
