Press Playist eine Veranstaltungsreihe vom Goethe-Institut Niederlande. In intimen Listening Sessions, wird ein Raum geschaffen um gemeinsam Pop-Musik zu hören und über ihren Kontext in der Pop-Kultur zu sprechen. Im Fokus stehen Genres, deren Einflüsse, das Zwischenspiel zwischen Sub- und Mainstreamkultur, politische Bewegungen, aber auch Themen wie Ökologie, Revolte, Migration und, wie diese sich in Pop-Musik und Pop-Kultur widerspiegeln. Musiker*innen, Podcaster*innen, DJs und Kulturschaffende aus der Kulturszene in Amsterdam und beyond sind eingeladen, eine Playlist zu erstellen, die dann, während einer Listening Session gemeinsam angehört wird. 

Neben der Musikschaffenden werden Besucher*innen gefragt ihr eigenes Wissen, Meinungen und Gefühle mitzubringen und zu teilen. Gemeinsam wird über verschiedene Betrachtungsweisen von Popkultur gesprochen. Was sind die Trends der Vergangenheit, die Trends der Gegenwart oder gar der Zukunft? Ist Popkultur ein progressiver Vorreiter für die Gestaltung einer besseren Welt oder nur ein Spiegel der Gesellschaft? Beides? Gibt es im Bezug auf Pop-Kultur eine globale Sprache und wodurch ist diese definiert? Wie werden transgressive Künstler*innen wahrgenommen? 

Am Donnerstag, den 20. April 2023 beginnt Press Play mit dem Amsterdammer Podcast Multifemale Megamix.

MULTIFEMALE MEGAMIX (MFMM) ist ein Forschungsprojekt und Podcast, das 2020 von Killian Butler und Michelle Parrott gegründet wurde. MFMMs Forschung basiert im Großen und Ganzen auf einem geteiltes Interesse an hyperkonsumierbaren Medien und kulturellen Trends sowie den Gesprächen, die diese Themen in ihrem sozialen und kulturellen Umfeld anstoßen. Der Podcast ist eine Plattform, die einen Dialog über die Möglichkeiten der Dekonstruktion der Ästhetik, der Massenmedien und der neuen Medienkultur aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln eröffnet, die in unserer aktuellen Umgebung und gelebten Erfahrung angesiedelt sind.

In der Vorbereitung zu Press Play haben Michelle und Killian stundenlang Musik gehört und sich mit dem Import und Export von Musik, Musikstilen und Trends beschäftigt. So hörten sie z.B. Tokyo Hotel, Rollergirl, Eurovision Songcontest Gewinnerin Lena Mayer-Landruth und viel Eurodance. Doch was die Playlist für die allererste Listening Session von Press Play beinhaltet, findet ihr nur heraus, wenn ihr kommt.

Press Play is a series of events organized by the Goethe-Institut Netherlands in the form of listening sessions, where an intimate space is created to listen to pop music collectively and talk about its context in popular culture. There will be a focus on genres, their influences, the interplay between sub- and mainstream culture, political movements, but also topics such as ecology, revolt, migration and how these are reflected in pop music and pop culture. Musicians, podcasters, DJs and cultural practitioners from the cultural scene in Amsterdam and beyond are invited to create a playlist that will be played during a listening session of Press Play.

While special guests are invited to bring their playlist, visitors are asked to bring and share their own knowledge, opinions, feelings in order to exchange thoughts on different ways of looking at pop culture. What are the trends of the past, the trends of the present and the trends of the future? Is pop culture a progressive pioneer for shaping a better world or just a mirror of society? Both? Is there a global language in relation to pop culture and what defines it? How are transgressive artists perceived?

The first guests to be invited are the Amsterdam-based podcast Multifemale Megamix.  

MULTIFEMALE MEGAMIX (MFMM) is a research project and podcast founded by Killian Butler and Michelle Parrott in 2020. MFMM's research is broadly based on a shared interest in hyper-consumable media and cultural trends, and the conversations these topics spark in their social and cultural environments. The podcast is a platform that opens a dialogue about the possibilities of deconstructing the aesthetics of mass media and new media culture from different perspectives situated in our current environment and lived experience.
