The German Film Week is a showcase of the latest and the hottest to come out of the German cinema market in the past two years. Now on its third edition, the festival features a roster of 10 full-length feature films that offer movie buffs a chance to delve into the rich variety of German cinema. A curated selection of 5 out of the original 10-film line-up will be screened in the cities of Baguio, Cebu and Cagayan de Oro after the first week in Manila.
Firstly, I would like to thank our partners, the FDCP for their magnanimous support and help, and SM Cinemas and our university partners for providing great venues to host our event.
This year’s program features ten new movies of contemporary German cinema that reach from classic themes of love, friendship and family, to important contemporary themes in Europe, such as the refugee crisis. The movie selection this year offers movies for young and old, for romantics and action fans, and for dreamers and realists. It combines easy-to-watch movies with movies that will make you think - giving the audience an insight into German art and culture.
The festival opens this year with the film Only God Can Judge Me (“Nur Gott kann mich richten”, 2017), which is an enthusiastically lurid drama from director Özgür Yildirim and which stars the famous German actor Moritz Bleibtreu. Only God Can Judge Me shows that German cinema can keep up with mainstream action movies made in Hollywood.
We hope you’ll enjoy the German Film Week and we hope that it’ll spark curiosity and interest in German culture amongst the Filipino audience.
See you at the box office!
