Thursday 7 November we are looking forward to the premiere of an animated short film for children produced in Rwanda and financed by the Goethe-Institut. Saturday 9 November we welcome the South African pianist Keenan Meyer on his MobiArts Tour here in Kigali. He will be accompanied by Water Sax, Samy Inkindi, Adeodatus and Cedrick Impano.

Jean-Luc Usabwimana will open his exhibition, which is dedicated to the cultural history of play through 10 visual installations, on Friday 21 November. The following Thursday, 28 November, another grantee of this year's Call for Applications will present his film project to us. We are very excited about Ganza Moise's satirical short film ‘Ako Kantu’. On the last Friday in November, Jules Cesar Niyonkuru will perform his production of ‘Histoire Générale des murs’.

Exhibition opening Kezia Mbabazi

"ME and Home: Navigating Rwandan Identity in Uganda" is a deeply personal narrative.
As an artist deeply rooted in Rwandan heritage but nurtured by the embrace of Uganda, she is embarking on a profound journey of self-discovery and cultural exploration. Through visual storytelling, she endeavours to delve into the intricate complexities of Rwandan identity within the fabric of Ugandan society. "ME and Home," is not just a scholarly pursuit but a deeply personal quest to trace her roots and reclaim her sense of belonging.
Her parents sought refuge in Uganda, fleeing the horrors of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. Raised in Uganda, she has grappled with the duality of her identity – the echoes of Rwanda in her blood, juxtaposed against the cultural rhythms of Uganda that have shaped her existence. Yet, as she navigates the corridors of her identity, she realises that home is not merely a geographical location; it is a tapestry woven from memories, experiences, and the whispers of ancestors.
"ME and Home" is not just about documenting history or dissecting sociopolitical dynamics; it is a testament to the resilience and strength of her spirit. It is about reclaiming narratives, celebrating diversity, and bridging the chasm between cultures.

exhibition opening „KINA MWANA“

The "KINA MWANA" exhibition is an innovative project in Rwanda dedicated to promoting, educating and preserving children's right to play through visual arts. The exhibition addresses the challenges faced by children in Rwanda as a result of the aftermath of the Tutsi genocide and technology addiction.
These challenges have reduced children's leisure time and negatively impacted their creativity, critical thinking, health, and social development.
"KINA MWANA" will feature 10 visual art installations, each depicting the rich history of games traditionally played by Rwandan children and youth.
In addition, the exhibit will serve as an educational tool, informing the community about the importance of play and encouraging parents to prioritize playtime. This initiative will help the community realize that play is essential for the healthy development of children. In collaboration with the Goethe Institute, the "KINA MWANA" exhibition will not only engage the local community, but also bring an international perspective and broaden the network to promote the exhibition and its critical message.

"Ako Kantu"

Ako Kantu is a satirical short film in the mockumentary genre. It follows Jado Jean Jacques, a disgraced former journalist now turned youtuber, who conducts sensationalist interviews. On this particular day, he follows Niyibizi, a local thief in the slums of Kigali, and asks him about his life and his lack of a love life. The more Jado follows Niyibizi, the more charismatic the thief becomes.  Ako kantu will look and feel like a normal day in the life interview where we wonder if it is real or not. The short film will play with the typical stereotypes of what we imagine a thief to be, only to find a thinker who asks us questions about morality and values. With tiktok, instagram, youtube at our fingertips and media houses in the same business of competing for our attention, who is a journalist, what is news, isn't everything content now?
Ako kantu is about satirizing the modern state of journalism and media.

"Histoire Générale des murs"

Jules Cesar Niyonkuru's project is a cross-disciplinary visual art, music and theatre piece adapted from a story called "Histoire Générale des murs" written by Sinzo Aanza. The story is about the physical and psychological walls that surround us, protecting us, isolating us from others and sometimes from ourselves. But what happens when these walls come down and expose us to society? In the proposed adaptation, they would like to explore the different types of walls, both physical and psychological, and how they affect individuals and communities. It can allow the audience to reflect on the walls they have built in their own lives and in society. The project will be a musical reading mixed with a visual art exhibition on wall (de)construction and a photographic exhibition on 'walls in history'.
