Culture departement:

As you may have gathered from our social media channels, this year's Volkano Festival, which was scheduled for early October, was cancelled by the rest of the team due to allegations of abuse against one of the organisers.
This decision was endorsed by the Goethe-Institut Kigali as one of the sponsors of the festival and we are supporting the remaining team and those affected in working out what happend and taking action. On Oktober 5th, a first event took place that followed on from this: a panel discussion by the collective ‘Artists Against Abuse’, which was dedicated to the topic of sexualised violence in the Rwandan art scene.

On Thursday 17 October at 6pm, Becks will be showing their short film about trans identities in Rwanda. This will be followed by two events dedicated to children's literature. On the last weekend of October, we are looking forward to the 6th edition of the Weekend Culturel Décolonial, with our partner of many years, the Centre Iriba.

Further details on the events mentioned can be found below.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Goethe-Institut.

Upcoming events

film screening - thursday the 17th

'Not a Choice' - short film by Elisabeth Becks

This movie follows a young trans woman who was born in a man's body and a trans man who was born in a woman's body. Their lives consist of the struggle and insecurity with their own physicality. From their teenage years onwards, their growing bodies change and so do society's reactions to them.
It is part of their everyday life to be discriminated against and to encounter a lack of understanding.

Children's book reading - Saturday the 19th

Focus on children's literature

Mid October, we are planning several events on the topic of children's literature. In this regard, we have invited several contemporary Rwandan children's book authors and publishers to our institute on Saturday, 19 October. They will present their latest publications and bring along a large book table that will provide a good overview. All children are cordially invited to this reading and we look forward to a colorful and lively Saturday with you.

panel discussion - Thursday the 24th

Writers Mingle

The African Writers Conference 2024 will take place in Kigali in the week from 22 to 27 October. This year's theme is ‘The Role of Children's Literature in Shaping the Youth’. As part of the conference, a panel discussion will be organised at the Institute on Thursday the 24th. We are very pleased to welcome panelists from South Sudan, Botswana, Uganda and Rwanda.

Weekend Culturel Décolonial 2024

In collaboration with the Center for Multimedia Heritage IRIBA, we will focus on colonial continuities and contemporary issues. This year's 6th edition will focus on workshops for the exchange of intergenerational memories and the preparation of commemoration and prevention activities. Various artists from Rwanda will once again inspire us with their work and encourage us to reflect.

INVITATION TO BID

The Goethe-Institut invites Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Sub-Saharan Africa to bid for a service agreement for the design and implementation of a training programme/s for young women* and the organisation of a small-scale public event. Africomics launch

The opening of the Africomic exhibition took place on September 28. This is a cooperation project between 15 Goethe-Instituts in sub-Saharan Africa. We are very pleased that we were able to show the exhibition in Kigali.

The winner of the Rwandan selection competition, Odile Uwera, and Dolph Ganza, one of the best-known Rwandan illustrators, led an exciting discussion about African comic art on our stage after the opening.

UBUTUMWA - AN ODE TO THE LOST LOVED ONES

Shema Amani's theater piece was the first Grantee of this year's Open Call for artistic projects to present us his work. The mixture of his audiovisual and dance performance left us very impressed, almost speechless. We would like to congratulate Shema and his team on their successful project and wish them all the best for the future.

The Face behind the Facade

Eya Khalifa and his team of gifted dancers took us on a journey to the depths of power relations and misogynistic violence. In the panel discussion that followed, the cultural background to this violence was reflected upon and ways towards a better future were discussed.

theatre play by Aubaine Hirwa

*Persona*

Aubaine Hirwa's performance took us into the depths of human consciousness. Through the medium of contemporary dance, accompanied by music and poetry, we explored the landscape of the mind. The choreography served as a mirror, reflecting the emotions and unseen struggles, embodying the inner conflicts that define the human experience.
We would like to thank Aubaine for her incredible performance and wish her all the best for the challenges ahead.

Stay tuned to our social media channels for photo documentation and a short highlight video.
